San Francisco City Hall Elopement Checklist

Planning to elope at San Francisco City Hall? You’ve chosen one of the most iconic and breathtaking venues in the city! Whether you're a local or traveling in for a destination elopement, there are a few key steps to take before saying "I do" under the Rotunda. This checklist will help you stay organized and ensure your SF City Hall wedding day goes off without a hitch—from booking your ceremony to capturing dreamy photos.

Book Your Marriage License Appointment

Reserve Your Civil Ceremony Time

  • Book your civil ceremony time

  • Book 90 days in advance (slots fill quickly!)

  • If you want a larger space, are having more than 6 guests or want more privacy: reserve the Fourth Floor or Mayors Balcony (~$1,000). These spaces must be reserved at least 30 days in advance.

  • Optional: hire your own officiant for a more personal touch. This is required for Fourth Floor and Mayors Balcony reservations.

Hire a Photographer

Choose Your Outfits

  • Dress code is flexible — go formal, casual, or somewhere in between. You’ll see everything from 10ft trains to mini dresses!

  • Bring a second pair of shoes that are comfortable to walk in

  • Accessorize! Cute hand bags, sun glasses and a bouquet are some of my favorites!

Book H+MU & Plan for Florals (Optional but Fun!)

  • Order a bouquet or boutonnière in advance

  • Simple arrangements work beautifully in this elegant setting

  • Schedule your H+MU appointment. Give yourself plenty of extra time!

  • Check out some of our favorite SF vendors

Decide Who’s Attending

  • Civil ceremonies allow up to 6 guests (including your photographer). They aren’t super strict about this but it’s best to keep it limited.

  • Let guests know the timing & location — signage is minimal inside. Send them my YouTube video for a tour so they know what to expect!

Book Necessary Hotels and Transportation

  • Arrive early: the building is large and can be confusing. I’ll meet you inside, right after you go through security to minimize confusion.

  • Consider Uber/Lyft or BART if you’re downtown

  • If driving, there’s a convenient garage @ 355 McAllister St

Bring All Required Documents

  • Printed appointment confirmations

  • Government-issued IDs

  • Any special paperwork if you've been previously married

Make a Post-Ceremony Plan

  • Book a celebratory brunch, picnic, or just a walk through the city

  • Looking for a great SF restaurant to celebrate? Check out this blog post — Top San Francisco Restaurants

  • Continue your photos at a second location! Ideas: Golden Gate Park, Baker Beach, Fort Point, Lands End

Take a Moment to Soak It All In

  • SF City Hall is stunning—slow down, breathe, and enjoy your elopement
